How does the UEFA Nations League work?

The Nations League was conceived as a more competitive replacement for international friendlies, offering an alternative qualifying route for the World Cup and the European Championship.

55 UEFA member states were divided into 12 groups based on their rankings at the start of the first edition. The top three leagues – A, B, and C – each consist of four numbered groups of four teams, while the bottom division, D, has a group of four and another of three.

In each group, the teams play against each other twice – home and away – with the eventual group winners promoted and the bottom teams relegated.

Promotion is of course not an option in Division A, but the four group winners do qualify for the final stage: the semi-finals, a small final and a grand final that determines the champion.

Relegation is not a problem for Division D teams either, as these teams are already in the lowest tier.

While there are four groups in both the B and C series to determine which bottom four teams are relegated, relegation playoffs determine which two of the four bottom teams are relegated from Division C to Division D.

What is at stake in 2020-21?

We used each team’s current FIFA World Ranking points to calculate the relative difficulty of their matches and predict what the standings will look like in 2021.

In Group A2, in which Belgium and England are located, the distance between the teams seems to be the greatest. Belgium has 1,765 points, a lot more than Iceland (1,465 points)

The Red Devils are in first place in the FIFA rankings and owe it to their status to reach the semi-finals. Last year, the Belgians disappointed by losing the last group match 5-2 to Switzerland, so they have something to put right on this edition.

Group A4, however, seems to be a lot more exciting. Spain, Germany and Switzerland have a team of a similar caliber.

When we look at the second division, Group B1 is a group of very similar quality in the teams. The difference between the highest and lowest ranked team is only 56 points.

Wales and Slovakia can dream of promotion to Division A as they have drawn a rather easy group. Both countries have on average more than 100 points more than their opponents.

There are a lot of teams of different levels in Division C as there is still a 145 point difference between the highest and lowest ranked team in the group where the teams are closest to each other.

Groups 1 and 2 have the clearest favorites on paper, with Montenegro and North Macedonia each comfortably higher than the teams they have to play against.

In Group C3, where Greece and Slovenia are the biggest favorites for group wins, we also find Moldova, which is in 175th place and is likely to be relegated this season.

In Division D, the Faroe Islands and Liechtenstein can dream of promotion as their teams are a lot stronger than their opponents.
